Improve Employee Performance Idea 108 – March 22, 2010: Explain the Personal Benefit of New Assignments
If you have an employee who resists taking on new assignments, you might get better cooperation by explaining how that assignment might “benefit” him or her. In other words, what might the employee gain from doing the task?
Consider possibilities like greater visibility, something to add to a resume, or an opportunity to get away from a difficult coworker for a short time. The possibilities are endless if you just think about what the employee might see as value from the assignment.
KEY REMINDER: To improve employee performance, you have to conduct effective performance discussions, give effective performance feedback, reinforce employee performance, and use effective performance phrases to write effective performance appraisals.
